Defiled Wastelands
"The creatures you find in the Wastelands are merely its immune system..."
The Defiled Wastelands is an evil biome with a desaturated, chunky and depressing theme, in contrast to the red and gorey Crimson and purple decaying Corruption, its counterparts.
It is also an alternative to the Riven and currently planned Ashen.
Every world will contain one of the four generated randomly except for special seeds (each with a 25% chance of occurring) or chosen by the player upon world creation.
All contain unique hazards and feature their own enemies, items, blocks and their own methods of inflicting Assimilation.
The tools, weapons and armor obtained via Defiled materials generally have minor advantages over those obtained via Corruption or Crimson materials, but are usually obtained from tougher enemies within the biome.
Furthermore, Defiled enemies are able to regenerate health with the mana stolen from the player on contact and release Wisps in Expert Mode after their death; hence why the items sourced from the Defiled are generally stronger.
The Defiled Wastelands initially spawn in the world with giant, oddly-shaped spikes rising from the ground, which could make navigating prove difficult without any explosives or Rope.
On the surface, Defiled Grass, Petrified Trees, Soulspores and Wilting Roses will generate.
Unlike the vanilla counterparts, the Defiled does not have thorny bushes.
The Defiled spreads and slowly converts adjacent tiles to their Defiled variants.
The spikes, Defiled Altars and Defiled Relays will only appear upon world generation, and will not spawn in a Defiled area that has formed from the spread.
Tiles cleansed from the Defiled will be quickly re-taken by the Defiled from Defiled Resurgence, which can only be properly handled once all of the Defiled Hearts in the world have been smashed.
If the Defiled manages to take over a new area, then that area will adopt the Defiled's theme and its respective enemies may spawn.
For an area to be considered Defiled, at least 300 tiles of Defiled Grass or Defiled blocks must be present.

Spread
The Defiled spreads itself, similar to the alternate evils and the Hallow.
This means that it slowly converts certain susceptible tiles that are in the vicinity of existing Defiled blocks.
While its spreading capabilities are very limited during pre-Hardmode, it spreads much faster and more aggressively after defeating the Wall of Flesh.
Defeating Plantera for the first time reduces the speed of the Defiled's spread by 1/2 (50%).
Defiled Desert and Snow
In Hardmode, the Defiled can spread through a Desert or Snow biome transforming them into their respective Defiled versions.
Both the Defiled Desert and Snow biome, are fairly similar to the Wastelands biome with the music and enemies being the same.
The Defiled Desert features its own set of enemies alongside the typical Defiled enemies as well.
Sand is replaced by Defiled Sand, and cacti drop ordinary cactus even though they appear Defiled in nature.
Waterleaf is not able to grow in Defiled Deserts.
If a Defiled Wastelands biome overlaps a Desert during world generation, Sand will be converted to Defiled Sand, but it will not spread until Hardmode.
Snow Blocks are not convertible, but Ice Blocks can be converted into Gray Ice.
Gray Ice can be created during generation if a Defiled Wastelands overlaps a Snow biome, but it will not spread until Hardmode.
Surface Desert
- Shattered Mummies
Underground Desert
- Dark Lamias
- Desert Spirits
- Shattered Ghouls
Notes
- The Defiled Wastelands can be created or spread artificially using Defiled Seeds, Dreadful Powder, White Water and either the Clentaminator or the Terraformer with Gray Solution, obtainable from the Steampunker during a Blood Moon in Defiled worlds.
- It is possible to create an artificial alternate evil biome in a Defiled world without the use of another world.
To do so, one must buy any of the evil seeds in Hardmode from the Dryad while in a Graveyard.
Tips
- When navigating the Defiled Wastelands bring explosives, torches and Rope for navigating the Defiled Wastelands, especially when it gets dark at night.
The desaturation of the atmosphere in the Defiled causes it to be darker at night and brighter during the day.
Bombs and rope will be especially useful for climbing over or blasting through the spikes that generate in the Wastelands upon world generation.
- Defiled enemies have varied regeneration rates that acts faster as their health decreases.
The rate and amount of health they can heal from stolen mana depends on their size, with smaller enemies healing significantly faster than larger enemies.
Trivia
- The Defiled was originally planned to have something to do with corrupted code, but for the namesake and consistency of the mod, it was later changed to better fit the feel of Terraria.
The indicator in the world creation menu
- The Defiled's lore indicates it is an artificial evil biome unlike its counterparts.
